Often, when we move countries, we tend to direct our focus on the things we are lacking: we can’t speak the language well, we don’t know anybody, we need a job, or we are not sure how the school system works. It is easy to get caught up in tallying those losses and gaps. But what would happen if we changed perspective and focused on what we do have? What do we bring?
In those first months—or even years—in a new country, we often adopt the mindset of a seeker. We focus on what we need from our new home just to survive the logistical grit of everyday life, constantly trying to absorb, adapt, and learn the rules of a foreign game.
But there comes a moment when the vertigo clears, and a vital question emerges:
What about the gifts we bring?
It is entirely normal to lose track of your gifts when going through the limbo of transition to a new self following a relocation. When your external reference points vanish, the connection to your own value can feel frayed.
Yet, the truth remains: nobody else has your story, and nobody else has overcome what you did. You are on this planet with a set of talents that are uniquely yours.
There is a beautiful paradox in how the expat journey handles these talents. While some of us temporarily lose sight of our strengths in the fog of moving, others discover entirely new gifts precisely while living abroad—or explicitly because of it. The friction of a foreign environment has a way of forcing hidden reservoirs of strength to the surface. Re-connecting to these most valuable assets is essential to manifest the life we want, and, ultimately, to discover who we truly are.
Shifting Focus: How to Uncover Your Hidden Wealth
Often, our greatest talents reside in the things we completely overlook. Because they are so deeply embedded in our personality, we tend to disregard them as “little things” of small importance. We tell ourselves, “Oh, that’s nothing, anyone can do that.” But they can’t.
If you are trying to remember the magic you carry, look for the clues left behind by your own nature:
- What Comes Beautifully Without Effort? Notice what comes naturally exceptional to you that others seem to actively struggle with. Are you a kitchen wizard who can effortlessly whip up a nourishing dinner from a few random ingredients left in the fridge? Are you naturally brilliant at making friends in a room full of strangers? Do you have an innate, unspoken taste in fashion and design? If it feels like breathing to you, it is a gift.
- What Makes You Feel Grounded? Your talents leave an energetic trail. Pay attention to the activities that quiet the background noise of the world and make you feel deeply anchored in your own skin. Your core gifts thrive wherever your nervous system finds alignment and joy.
- The Childhood Default: Before the world—or a major relocation—told you who you had to be to survive, how did you naturally operate? The traits that defined your childhood play are often the purest, uncorrupted expressions of your unique adult strengths.
The Foundation of True Belonging
We often think that to belong, we must mold ourselves into the shapes demanded by our new culture. But true integration doesn’t demand that you erase who you are; it requires you to remember what you carry.
When you anchor yourself in your authentic talents, you stop performing a culture and start contributing to it. Your unique strengths are the absolute foundation of your true belonging. They transform you from a permanent guest into a vital stakeholder in your new home.
You are not a blank slate waiting to be written on by your environment. You are a repository of unique experiences, hard-earned resilience, and unparalleled perspective.
